The goal of the Island Recreation Center Internship Program is to provide an intern with the opportunity to apply information and skills obtained in the classroom to real-life working situations. The internship also offers the opportunity to gain experience in planning, organizing, leading and evaluating various recreational programs.
As a representative of the Island Recreation Center, interns are expected to always have a positive attitude and must be self-driven to achieve the best they can. Island Rec will do everything they can to provide interns with effective job training, support and experience. Your internship focus will be with Youth Programs with a commitment to summer camp. Interns will have other opportunities to experience other departments such as Special Events and Athletics.
To obtain the highest benefit from the experience the intern will be expected to: Conduct himself/herself in a profession manner Dress according to agency and position standards Be timely to all shifts, meetings, events, etc. Communicate regularly and effectively with his/her supervisor Notify supervisor in advance of any anticipated absence from work Ask questions when in doubt Be friendly, courteous and treat everyone in all circumstances with dignity and respect Not engage in, or advertise, personal or other business while on duty as an intern Maintain confidentiality of participant or coworker information and data Work with supervisor to become involved in opportunities presented to them as schedules permit Show initiative and creativity by offering ideas and suggestions for improvement Show effective communication skills when engaging with parents and children Provide leadership and guidance to the program participants through the ability to motivate, lead, guide and teach children in an afterschool or camp setting.
Provide program participants with a positive environment by conducting daily recreational activities such as sports, games, dance, exercise, media, arts & crafts and other activities Implement positive discipline techniques and group management Maintain the highest standards of health and safety by keep the program participants best interest in mind at all times Observe safety precautions; correct minor safety problems and immediately report safety concerns to the supervisor; conduct activities in a safe manner maintain discipline at indoor and outdoor recreation areas including; pool, playground, gym, classrooms, field, etc.
Communicate effectively with co-workers, supervisors, program participants and parents Be flexible and a team player, working in collaboration with your team Always be customer service oriented and adhere to all Island Recreation Association standards Maintain a clean and orderly facility
